The Medical College of Wisconsin is a private, national institution that was founded in 1893 under the name Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1913, the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Milwaukee Medical College joined to become the Marquette University School of Medicine. In 1967  the school changed to a private, free standing institution and in 1970 it was renamed The Medical College of Wisconsin.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is listed as number 6 on the top anesthesiology schools in the United States. The mission of the Department of Anesthesiology is to achieve excellence in giving care to patients, to teach medical students, residents, and to conduct research. The school training has one-on-one teaching with faculty and hands-on experience. The educational program of the department has case discussions, and lectures. Training with simulators is available for learning about the adult and pediatric patient. The students have learning discussions, and oral examinations to help residents get ready for the board certification process. Special workshops are available on topics like the anesthesia machine, trauma, and airway management. Residents are assigned to faculty to give them guidance to help them improve in their skills and help them with their career goals. The Department of Anesthesiology faculty performs clinical research. This research is funded through NIH, VA, American Society of Anesthesiologists, and American Heart Association grants. The Anesthesiology Department is fifth in NIH funding among all United States departments of anesthesiology. They do research in cardiovascular, respiratory, neuropath physiology and pharmacology. The research is done at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the VA Medical Center. The faculty of the anesthesiology Department has been leaders in this field.
